Should I Get a Google Pixel 3?
Published by Carly on Nov 1st 2018
Just released in October, the Google Pixel 3 is what everyone is talking about with the ultimate question being, “should I get it?” Since it’s original release in 2016, the Google Pixel has been ground breaking for the world of smart phones and the latest flagship release is a solid addition to the line. Below, we will tell you the main things you need to know when considering a purchase of the Google Pixel 3!
Comparison to Pixel 2
The Pixel 3 has many similarities to its predecessor, the Pixel 2. In fact, most of the specs are similar, however, a few major upgrades have been made to the Pixel 3. First, the processor has been upgraded which means a faster, smoother phone, particularly when using games and apps. Another difference is that while the Pixel 2 had a back made of aluminum and glass, the Pixel 3 features an all glass back, which allows for wireless charging (see below). Also, the display on the Pixel 3 has improved from previous Pixels; the display is OLED with a 2,260 x 1,080 pixel resolution.
Artificial Intelligence
One of the more innovative features of the Pixel 3 involves the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI). Several new features were made possible due to the AI technology within the Pixel 3. Call Screening, a brand new function for the Pixel, allows you to send an incoming caller to an automated system, which asks them to answer a few prompts, such as who they are and why they are calling. The best part about Call Screening is that the responses from callers comes to you as real time notifications, which allows you to choose whether or not you would like to answer. Another feature made possible by AI is Google Duplex. While this feature is not yet available for the Pixel, it is said to be coming “soon”. Google Duplex will function as a basic AI assistant, which can complete tasks such as making appointments or reservations for you.
Camera
The Pixel line of phones is known for their exceptional cameras from the beginning and the Pixel 3 is no different. One major improvement to the Pixel 3 is the addition of a second front facing camera, a wide-angle lens. This additional camera allows for wider selfies, when you want to fit in the whole group, or just capture more of the background behind you easily. Another exciting addition to the camera functions is the new Top Shot Mode, which captures multiple frames for each photo and then recommends the best frame as an alternative to your actual shot. Also, the Super Res Zoom feature is an optimized digital zoom experience that rivals that of zooms from a telephoto lens. This entails a clearer, more detailed zoomed photo. All of these additions make the previously great camera on the Pixel even better.
Speakers and Music
When you purchase the Google Pixel 3, you will receive six months of free YouTube Music subscription! A $60 value.
So if you are listening to that music on the Pixel 3 you might notice an improvement in sound quality from previous smart phones. Google claims that the speakers on the Pixel 3 measure 40% louder than those on the Pixel 2, a definite leap toward clearer and crisper sound.
Charging
A first for the Pixel line, the Pixel 3 is wireless charging compatible. Of course, you can still charge the “old fashioned” way through a USB charger, but the Pixel 3 jumped on the wireless charging bandwagon. Google has launched the Google Pixel Stand for charging, though the Pixel 3 can also be charged on any Qi wireless charger. However, just be aware that there are some discrepancies when charging the Pixel 3 on a Qi charger versus a Google Pixel Stand, which you can read more about, here.
The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL come in three colors: Just Black, Very White, and Not Pink. The Pixel 3 is available starting at $799 for 64 GB of storage or $899 for 128 GB. The Pixel 3 XL starts at $899 for 64GB and is $999 for 128 GB.
